Our shunting staff are a core professional group at SBB. Every day, they make a key contribution to the transport of nearly one million people in the passenger services sector as well as 185,000 tonnes of goods with SBB Cargo.

Paid apprenticeships and various internal further training opportunities are now available.

The following entry levels are currently open within our shunting operations.

Shunting crew member (Cargo).

As a shunting crew member, you are responsible for receiving freight trains, including splitting them and delivering wagons to the customer. Releasing the brakes, disconnecting couplings, shunting wagons, preparing freight trains for departure and performing technical inspections of trains are just some of the many tasks that you take on throughout your varied work day. Together with colleagues from other professional groups, you ensure the timely, safe formation of trains, thereby playing an important role for SBB.

Shunting specialist (Cargo).

As a shunting specialist, you receive internal training to plan and manage complex shunting operations. You form and split trains, as well as prepare them for their journeys. Using the expertise you acquire at SBB, you examine the vehicles and assess whether they are fit for operation. In the event of damage, you take stock of the situation and determine the cause of the damage. In this role, you are also in constant contact with the locomotive crew and customers.

Shunting engine driver.

In SBB’s internal training to become a shunting engine driver, you will learn how to safely move trains within stations and facilities and how to put them together properly. You will drive various engines and multiple units at up to 40km/h, ensuring that every wagon is where it needs to be. Before every journey, you will prepare everything carefully: you will get the locomotive started, check functions and ensure that everything is ready. During operations, you will maintain an overview of everything and ensure that all movements go smoothly and are carried our safely. Your work will be an important contribution, ensuring that trains are put together correctly and that rail traffic functions reliably and punctually.

Take individual responsibility.

You have a high level of individual responsibility. Despite a high degree of independence, you also need good teamwork skills. You are regularly in contact with your colleagues via radio or telephone and are an integral part of a team. Through your work, you are part of something bigger. With the help of our complex delivery system, you ensure that trains and wagons arrive safely and on time at their destination.

Exciting challenges.

You are happy to work in all four seasons and enjoy working outdoors, regardless of the wind or weather. And the hard physical work that the profession involves doesn’t bother you. In your daily work, you operate a tablet and other tools. Dealing with modern work equipment is no problem for you.

For shunting roles in passenger services and with SBB Cargo, we are open to candidates with or without an apprenticeship diploma. We are much more interested in your motivation and your willingness to work together with your colleagues. It is also important that you can handle any weather and work outside in all kinds of weather conditions. During your daily work, you operate a tablet and other tools, so it is important that you already have a certain affinity for technology.

The shift schedules are announced five weeks in advance. Work is often performed at night. Thanks to shift work, you can organise your leisure time freely.

SBB operates around the clock, which means you’re on duty on weekdays, weekends and holidays. Irregular working hours are the norm at SBB. In return, you have more time for family and friends during the week and can organise your free time more flexibly.

There are many further training opportunities for shunting. With SBB Cargo, the first step is to become a shunting specialist. You can achieve this by undertaking internal training. Through various modules such as ‘Operational train inspection’ or ‘Wagon load inspector’, you acquire the expertise required for the role of shunting specialist. You also have the option of joining the passenger services unit or SBB Cargo directly as a shunting specialist. As a shunting specialist, you manage and coordinate complex shunting manoeuvres with freight wagons or passenger coaches, conduct technical train inspections and digitally record wagon data in the system. You take responsibility and work independently.

Interested in driving a locomotive yourself? This is also possible! If you fulfil the requirements, you can complete additional in-depth internal training to hop into the driver’s seat. There are also further opportunities to choose a career path with technical or management responsibilities.
